Instituting the World Flan Day!

Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.

Have you already tasted this creamy, sweet, caramelized delicacy? Known by many different names, it has Latin roots but a worldly reach. Crème caramel renversé (France) and Pudim Flan (Portugal) are just a few of the names in use. Pudim de Leite (Brazil) or Milk Pudding is another common term. In Spain, it is known as Flan de huevos, while in Latin America, it’s called Flan de leche. In North America, it goes simply by the name Flan. We are hereby instituting the World Flan Day!

The traditional recipe asks for eggs, milk, and sugar (or condensed milk) to be beaten together. Caramelized sugar goes still warm into the mold before the liquid mixture is poured. That is then baked slowly in the oven in a bain-Marie, in low temperature until it becomes a custard. You don’t want to burn the caramel or coagulate the egg whites. The final result gets really smooth! It can be flavored with vanilla, cinnamon, orange, coconut, chocolate, etc.

How to celebrate this date

There are many ways that you can celebrate this date. You can go with the home-made version of this dessert. That is a wonderful way of spending quality time with your family and loved ones. You can have the kids helping prepare by whisking the eggs and milk together. Let the adults handle the caramel and the oven. Another choice is for you to support your local community by finding bakeries that produce it and buying from them. Take some time to learn the history of this rich dessert. Also, promote contests to find the most deliciously looking flan. The participants can post pictures on social media with the hashtag #WorldFlanDay and spread the joy.

Whatever you do, don’t let this day go unnoticed. Let’s celebrate the creamy, the sweet and the caramelized! Happy World Flan Day!
