What do you enjoy doing most in your leisure time?
Leisure time is precious and I cherish enjoying it. I even dare to say, it’s sacred. It’s that slice of the day that you can spend exclusively with yourself. Nobody has the right to interfere with how you decide to employ it. So, use it wisely, to your advantage. I have just recently started to discover the power of meditation. I must say, the feeling of relaxation it has brought to my life is impressive. It has greatly enhanced my sensation of well-being.
You don’t need to have much to start your meditation exercise. A calm place and around five or ten minutes without interruption can work wonders. Put some relaxing music in a low volume. After you get used to it, you can increase the time you spend on it.
Find a comfortable position
A lot of people like to meditate doing the lotus pose. To be honest, it is a little bit advanced for me. Any comfortable position works fine. You can sit in a chair, have your feet firmly resting in the floor, arms relaxed. I have been practicing sleep meditation. Laying down in my own bed before my sleep time is what works best for me.
Focus on your breath
Take a few breaths, inhaling deeply through your nose for a count of four, hold for four. Exhale through your mouth for a count of six. Repeat this three or four times, to settle in. Shift to natural breathing, noticing the rhythm of your breath. Notice the sensation of air as it enters your nostrils. Feel it as it leaves. Watch the rise and fall of your chest or belly.
Think of a soothing place or environment
Imagine yourself in a peaceful setting, like a beach or a forest. Picture every detail: the sound of waves, the warmth of the sun, or the smell of fresh air. Let this image calm you. Allow thoughts to drift. If your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to your breath or visualization. It’s okay to have thoughts, it’s all part of the process.
After ten minutes (or whatever time you choose), take a deep breath. Then slowly bring your awareness back to the room. Wiggle your fingers and toes, and open your eyes when ready.
Remember, you are the most important person in your world. If you are not well yourself, how can you help others? Let me know in the comments how you use the power of meditation in your life.
