What movies or TV series have you watched more than 5 times?
Oh, my, there are so many! Off the top of my head, I can think of several. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one example. Another is Harry Potter‘s eight movies. Additionally, I watched several times the classics of suspense by Alfred Hitchcock. These include Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window, Dial M for Murder and The Birds. But the one movie I have watched the most is The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
35th anniversary in 2010
I got the 35th anniversary blu-ray edition in 2011, when I went traveling through Australia. To be honest, I didn’t know anything about the movie before that, but something in it caught my attention. I don’t know if it was the distinctive red lips on the cover, or the dust jacket info. Maybe I thought that a movie important enough to have a commemorative edition was worth watching. Boy, was I right!
Don’t Dream It, Be It
Each and every one of the numbers of this musical is a gem. Science Fiction/Double Feature is iconic. I love those disembodied red lips! Dammit Janet is so cute, it brings an innocence to the musical. The Time Warp is both infectious and psychedelic. And when they are joined together, they make perfect sense. The culmination for me is when they sing Don’t Dream It, Be It. This song encapsulates the whole message of the show.
LGBTQIA+ themes
One of the many times that I watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show was with my mom and my (then) little sister. She was probably 16 or 17 years old at the time. I think it was good for her to watch it, it was important for me to watch it with them. The movie touches several LGBTQIA+ themes. At that time, I was still processing all of that in my own life.
50th anniversary in 2025
This year it will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Needless to say, I’m looking ahead for any events in my region. I will probably buy another commemorative edition, since I left mine back in Brazil. I miss watching it more often, like I did when I lived there. It’s going to be a great opportunity to catch up!
For all folks out there struggling to find their identity in the world, I’d like to say from experience: don’t dream it, be it!
