Leading by example

Are you a leader or a follower?

When we think of leadership, the first idea that probably comes to mind is the charismatic type. The leader that gives powerful speeches and excels at persuasion. They thrive on the big stage, whether on television or in front of large crowds. But that’s not the only kind. There’s also a quieter, more introspective form. This type works best in smaller groups, leading by example instead of by command. That’s the kind of leader I believe I am.

Here are some of my leadership characteristics.

Service to others

I believe in empowering people to grow and thrive. Whenever possible, I share my knowledge and time with those I work with. I try to act as a mentor—guided by empathy, if you will—and help bring out the best in each person. Over time, I began to notice something. The team members I supported started recommending others to reach out to me. Slowly, we formed a network of mutual support—an informal community, you could say. But make no mistake: I learn just as much as I share.

Vision through creativity

Another way I try to lead is through sharing my vision—something I have been doing through my blog. I have been receiving encouraging feedback, and a genuine dialogue has begun to form between me and my readers. I’m convinced that leadership doesn’t require being authoritarian or giving orders. In fact, I’m not looking for any personal advantage from this. What I want is to share my perspective, to influence—but also to be influenced through open discussion.

Following a moral compass

I believe in living ethically and respecting others. For example, I have shared my thoughts on values like liberty and freedom. Above all, I have explored several philosophical traditions—from Plato’s dialogues to Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy. To me, a virtuous life is a life worth living. And while I try to live by those principles myself, leading by example, I also encourage others to do the same. That, too, is a form of leadership.

What do you think are the greatest characteristics of leadership? Do you see that in me? And more importantly, do you see that in you?
