What are your favorite websites?
I have dozens, if not hundreds, of favorite websites. My list for this post was getting quite big. So, I decided to take a different approach and to focus all of them around one single topic. So here goes a list of my favorite websites focused on van Gogh.
Museums and artworks
One of the first suggestions is the Van Gogh Museum where you will find thousands of his paintings and drawings. You will find his artworks in other museums around the world as well. The Art Institute of Chicago, The Met, and The MASP in Brazil are other examples. If you want to have all of them in the convenience of your home, you can get this Taschen edition.
Van Gogh’s personal correspondence
A long time ago I read “The Letters of a Post-Impressionist” by Vincent van Gogh. It is the correspondence between Vincent and his younger brother Theo. The book is available for free on the Internet Archive or on Project Gutenberg. You can also find the audio version read by volunteers on LibriVox.
I’m going to be honest with you guys, some parts of it brought me to tears. It is touching to see the kind of relationship that the two brothers had. Theo was always supporting Vincent, not only emotionally, but with money and painting materials. Vincent on the other side was doing his best to keep his mind always occupied and was painting frenetically. As is well known, Vincent struggled with mental health and depression. He battled these issues during a good part of his adult life. And painting was almost a therapy to him. He cut his own ear off in some of his episodes. In another he injured himself with a gun. He passed away a couple days later by complications of these wounds. His last words according to Theo were “the sadness will last forever.” You can find the whole story on the Wikipedia page for him.
And a beautiful movie among websites on van Gogh
There is an Oscars nominated animation focusing mainly on the circumstances of his death, “Loving Vincent”. Each scene was hand painted, frame by frame. I couldn’t let it out of my favorite websites focused on van Gogh. You can find all the details including how to watch it on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. The trailer on YouTube is below:
And last, but not least, this post touches on some issues of mental health. If you are struggling with those, you can find help on the next links, in Canada, Brazil or the USA. Help is available and your story isn’t over. Stay safe.
