Grandma’s sourdough bread

What’s your favorite thing to cook?

There’s a lot of things I like to cook. Definitely my favorite one is bread. Obviously, I include in this category the Brazilian cheese bread, which is a gluten free bread. I had a strong influence in my cooking disposition. What I loved the most growing up was my grandma’s sourdough bread.

My grandma used to share her sourdough starter with her neighbors. Surprisingly, she was afraid that we, her grandchildren, would refuse eating her bread. She feared we would think the starter was disgusting. That’s why she hid it from us in a high place. We were curious children though. I knew where it was and always checked on it when she was not looking. I found it fascinating that this was what made the dough rise.

This bittersweet memory of her brings me to tears. I’d like her to know that after so many years I have been doing bread in the same way. At first, I didn’t realize it, but now I understand why I enjoy making it. I’m trying to recreate the same flavors from my childhood. It reminds me of the afternoon teas we had in her house. The hot bread fresh out of the oven, butter melting over it. I was a lucky kid!

And here is a generous offer. If you ask me, I can share my favorite bread recipes. It can even include my grandma’s sourdough bread. I’d love to get yours also. Just let me know in the comments!

Do you have any favorite thing you like to cook? What is it?
